During a round, you can manually record penalties on your watch by using the Penalty option within the Game Menu. Here’s how it works and what each penalty option means.
How to Access the Penalty Screen:
- Unlock the screen by pressing the bottom-left button.
- Open the Game Menu.
- Scroll to the Penalty screen.
- Select the appropriate penalty option as described below.
Penalty Options Explained
Lost Ball / Out of Bounds
- Use this when you lose a ball or hit one out of bounds.
- Adds one penalty stroke and tells the system you're replaying the shot from the same location.
- You’ll see “Recorded” on screen after confirming, and then it will return to the F/M/B screen.
Drop
- Use this when you take a penalty drop (e.g. after finding a water hazard or an unplayable lie).
- Record the drop at the exact spot where you're taking the drop.
- Adds one penalty stroke and adjusts the shot location.
- The screen will show “Recorded” after confirming before returning to the F/M/B screen.
Provisional
- Use this before hitting a provisional ball.
- Press the top-right button to confirm a provisional shot.
- A timer will appear to time your ball search.
- If you find your ball, confirm it was found — the provisional shot and penalty will be removed.
- If your ball is lost, confirm it — the provisional shot and penalty will be recorded.
Once confirmed, the watch will return to the F/M/B screen.
Penalty (1- or 2-Stroke)
- Use this for rule-based penalties like:
- Being late to the tee
- Ball striking yourself or equipment
- Select whether it's a 1-stroke or 2-stroke penalty.
- Press the top-right button to confirm.
- You’ll see “Recorded” and then the watch will return to the F/M/B screen.
Tip:
Make sure to record penalties as they occur to ensure your data and stats remain accurate. If anything is missed, you can still edit it post-round in the Shot Scope app.

Hi,
How do you get back to the timer after the screen is locked automatically?
Regards,
Raymond
In the mode where you have NOT selected Scoring, there are far too many clicks to get to penalties on the X5 from the main screen to be useful on the course. I just add while editing, post round. Navigating the same function on V3 wasn’t great but much fewer clicks
